Sierra Gets A Haircut

by jdfulkerson

Sierra has never really had a haircut, some trims yes, but minor adjustments. Rather that endure the hassle of doing her hair in the morning, we made an agreement that she could manage her hair by herself if it was cut to a length she could manage. Additionally she decided to send her ponytail to Locks of Love to be made into a wig for little girls with cancer or other diseases where treatment causes hair loss. We are vey proud of her, and her new look.

New Tent Camper gets tryout

by jdfulkerson

We finally got to try out the new tent camper. In pioneer times trappers from the Hudson Bay company would set out a test camp a few hours from the post to make sure they had everything. This was our version, camping at Lake Pleasant about 30 miles from the house. It was windy, and we did try out the furnace Sunday morning, everything seemed to work find, Now for a few more shakedown trips before we take off on vacation.

Earth Day 2008

Earth Day came and went. I was pleased to see more awaremess of it, five years ago I thought it was a goner. So what do we do to be green? Over 95% of all the light bulbs are CFL, We compost for our garden, we recycle as much as we can. We conserve water and electricity We have a Prius. Most of the backyard is lighted by solar lights, including two strings of "holiday" solar lights in the new gazebo. (has a cool glow, almost like a full moon) We have a large solar oven that cooks just fine thank you. The big solar array project is about to start powering the fish pond (we use the sludge as a high grade organic fertilizer) and light the sheds.

 Ginger goes through surgery

Ginger had to go through surgery to remove a cancerous tumor and get spayed to stop the advance of a number of other tumors. She seems to be doing much better, although she can't wait to have her sutures removed so she can lounge out in the lawn again. We know the cancer will eventually be back and will eventually kill her, but we have bought this gentle grand old dog some time.

Happy Birthday . . . To ME!

May 25 was my (J.D.) birthday. We were going to take the camper up to Flagstaff but a late winter storm with lots of high wind and even SNOW prevented that. So we went to some places I wanted to go. The Art Museum, The Ocean Floor aquarium shop, and this place, Arizona Falls. Dinner at Red Lobster finished off a nice day.

Pond Lilly heralds Summer

It's been a wierd start to summer. It snows 4 inches in Flagstaff then we hit 110 degrees, less than 5 days later it snows in Flagstaff again! The Koi Pond is finally clean and crystal clear. I'll probably have to clean the filters every week, but it's worth it. We were rewarded with the first Pond Lily to bloom. Looks like some of the fish are full of eggs too. Ginger has been very frolicy and active, She lost a lot of weight up to the surgery but her appitite has returned.

Happy 28th. of June!

Since we decided to spend the fourth of July in Flagstaff this year, we decided to attend the local parks fireworks display. They always try to have their display the Saturday before the fourth of July. That works since Flagstaff has banned fireworks displays forever. It was hot, but fun. next weekend Flagstaff.

Flag On The Fourth

We took the Fourth of July weekend and went to Flagstaff. This was the second shakedown for the camper trailer and it did fine. The Jeep did fairly well towing it up the mountain. Did 11 MPG and stayed above 45 MPH.
It rained right after we set up and it was very nice. Later we had a picnic dinner with our Flagstaff friends Kat & Scott. Kat had to work but Scott went with us to the Flagstaff Art event First Friday. It was quite crowded downtown. Did run into our friends Pete & Donna who were also up in Flag escaping the heat.
We spent some time shopping for Sierra's School Clothes and stopped by the Art in the Park Art show.
Sunday on the way out we stopped at Kat & Scott's house to visit and tour all the changes they have made.
Got into town with only traffic getting bad around Pinnacle Peak Road.

SMILE and say GOOGLE!

by jdfulkerson
Well, the Google street view camera car must have been by. If you go to Google and type in our address then hit "Map", you will see our street view photo. By close observation we think they were by around Thanksgiving. They even have the car the police was using while staking out the neighborhood. Technology, it's wild.

Heres the Google Map Camera Car getting a ticket!

ON LOCATION - Waldport Oregon

by jdfulkerson
Welcome from cool foggy Waldport. It was foggy when we came in last night, REALLY foggy over night, and is still foggy.
Went to the Oregon Vortex as part of our "Vortexes of the World" tour. It was interesting. Sue and Sierra actally got a bit sick to the stomach in it. I was disoriented and felt severely off center. I mean more than normal.
Blackberry bushes EVERYWHERE on the trip Medford and inland. At the last KOA Sierra and I picked some for breakfast. Photos later.

 Composting Away

Friends Carrie and Kieth moved to Maine, we helped Carrie get the last of their household into a rather small moving truck. Sue pulled off a minor miracle in getting almost everything into the truck, but a few items simply could not be loaded. Donna and Pete went above and beyond by picking it up in their truck and dropping it off at our house. (Extremely out of the way). Although we have four bins we just can not get the time to keep them turned and properly moist to compost. Mostly lots of dried grass and mummified kitchen scraps. With this rotating drum composter we can really get the break down to black gold that we are looking for. The small green pail is the inside compost bucket we bought at Real Goods in Hopland California while on vacation.

 Curtains for the Treefort

When our friends moved to Maine, Carrie gave Sierra a beaded door curtain. Sue rebuilt it so it would cover two doors on her treefort playset.

Today is the first day of Fall. It was at least 102 degrees by my weather station. Last Saturday Sierra joined Soccer. So we are now officially "Soccer Parents".

Busy Weekend

The second weekend of November was a busy one. Sierra had her first Soccer game. Only six from her team showed up and they were trounced. She stayed for the second game to help out as they were short too. I'll say, most on the other team were easily 5 or more inches taller than they were. Again with the trounce.
Sunday I set out some nice pork chops in the solar cooker, they were cooking nicely even though it was partly cloudy, so we went to Costco for groceries. A thunderstorm came through with very heavy rain. When we got back to the house the cooker was wet but the chops were looking good. They were still at 107 degrees, we put them into the microwave to get them back up to heat. They were good. I then bought gas for the car at Costco and looking at the $2.28 per gal price reflected that only four months ago I paid $4.50 per gal in northern California.

My Soccer Tournament

by sdfulkerson
On November 15,2008 was one of my most exciting days yet of my life. My team's name was the Grizzlies and it was not so pretty, so here's what happened. I had 3 games, my first game we got 0 goals, the second game all we got was 1 goal, our third game we got 3 goals and guess what we won but we didn't get to go to the championship. We were all tired after the tournament but we could walk. So that's my soccer tournament. - Sierra Fulkerson

2008 Christmas Tree

by jdfulkerson
We borrowed an idea from Pete & Donna and had a tree trimming party ourselves. Turned out pretty good!.

Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly is one of Sue and my favorite contemporary artists. His medium is glass, and he loves big installations. The momemt I found out that the Desert Botanical Garden would have one of his installations, we knew we had to go. Thanks to friends Pete & Donna (members of the garden) we got to go for free.
Needless to say we really enjoyed the three hours we spent there. Sierra was overcome by the works and loved it as much as we did. We imagine it is incredible at night. We have selected some of the 122 photos we took and put them in the album. Some are a lot larger, so be sure to click on them to get the largest size.

 Merry Christmas 2008

Merry Christmas 2008 from rainy Phoenix. A good day to just veg around the house and enjoy the company of family.
Despite our current economic crunch (me out of work for two weeks) we pulled off a good Christmas thanks to extreme bargain hunting, the internet and stores going out of business.
We take a moment to thank our blessings that we had a good Christmas. We had an extended family dinner Christmas Eve at Rob & Theresas with Bob & Judy. It was fun for everyone. Photos in the Album section.
Hope all our readers also had a Merry Christmas.

Light Rail Opens!

The Phoenix Light Rail system opened on Saturday, we waited until Monday figuring the crowds would have thinned out.
WRONG!
The trains were packed. I started calling it the Phoenix Sardine Rail packed in light oil. As the line is free until January 1, Sierra and I rode the entire route from Christown to Dobson in Mesa. On the way back we thought we would stop in Tempe and walk around the lake, but with the crowd I decided not to as we would sacrifice our seat for a guarantee of standing for the rest of the trip.
The trip was suppose to be 1 hour each way but wound up 2 hours each way. Once everything settles it will probabaly improve to their projections.
